During January and February 2000 I climbed to the summit of Aconcagua by myself. I started the acclimatisation in Puente del Inca and stayed there for three days. Than I entered the Parque Provincial Aconcagua and pitched my tend in Confluecia. After a day of rest I visited Plaza Franzia. The next day the dreadful walk to the base camp followed. It took me 8 1/2 hours to reach the camp. Afterwards I required a further day of rest. For the next two days I carried food and other equipment to Nido Cóndores and stored it in a big plastic bag. I hopped that nothing would be stolen and it was really good luck that nothing disappeared. Because of the big difference in altitude between the base camp and Nido Cóndores I first spent three nights in Plaza Canadá before I moved to Nido. While I was in Plaza Canadá I had two day trips to the Berlin Hut for further acclimatisation. After I reached Nido, I had a final day of rest. I stayed there without any headache or any indication of altitude sickness. From Nido I started the attack on the summit. I left at half past three in the morning, in temperatures of about -15 degree centigrade. At the entrance of the traverse the temperature meanwhile dropped to -20°C. This was not the problem, but the terrible wind from the front was almost unbearable. In the channel (Canaletta) the wind disappeared suddenly and the temperature there was spring-like. Finally at 2:37 pm I set foot on the summit plateau. For me a really great moment to stand on the top of the continent of America. For the way back I took my time, there was no reason to hurry. I was rather tired and I didn't feel fancy it. Three days later I arrived in Puente del Inca. With the next bus I went to Santiago and had two nice weeks in Chile where I recreated from the strain of the last weeks.
