We climbed the traditional route up the face. You are correct about the loose rock. Lots of good foot holds and handholds but you need to check on each because many rocks are loose. This also makes it a little bit of a concern when climbers are below you because rock can inadvertantly be kicked down the hill which doesn't win you many friends. Having said all that, Ha Ling is a great climb and has beautiful views in all directions. It is about 10 full pitches to the top with a pretty constant level of difficulty.
If you're in the area and are looking for a fun climb, Ha Ling is a good choice. You need to be in pretty good shape though as the approach is a solid hour uphill over scree and the cliffside offers relatively little in the way of ledges.
