Mount Whitney Trip Report (#8012)

We took three days to summit Mt. Whitney. Two out of three of us made it, one of our guys got bad altitude sickness and had to turn back on the summit day. The other two of us went from our wintry camp at around 10000 feet up to the summit. We definitely needed our crampons for the switchbacks section. We made the difficult decision to continue to the summit once we reached the saddle at around 3 in the afternoon. We were slow but continued on because of the clear skies to the west and the full moon we expected. We made the summit just as the sun was setting and made a somewhat harrowing descent down the switchbacks in the dark. The difficulty was exacerbated by my partner's altitude sickness causing him to stumble like a drunk across some steep snowfield sections. We made it back to the tents at around 10 that night and immediately passed out. Long day, but a fantastic experience. We didn't see a soul the entire day. Really spectacular.
