Mount Washington

Featured photo of Mount Washington

This Mount Washington is located in the southeast corner of the Olympic mountain range within the Mt. Skokomish Wilderness of Olympic National Forest. Mount Washington is situated 3 miles north of Lake Cushman and 2 miles south of the Mount Pershing massif. The mountain is named for its resemblance to the profile of George Washington, with the summit being his chin. Since there are no trails to the summit, the one day climb involves some route-finding, and the final summit block involves exposed class 3-4 scrambling on pillow basalt. The summit panorama includes interior Olympic peaks, the waters of Puget Sound, Hood Canal, and Lake Cushman, and the Cascade Range from Mt. Baker to Mt. Rainier, Adams, and Mount St. Helens. Mount Washington is a popular winter destination. Mt. Washington appears on Seattleā€™s western skyline, dominating the southern end of the Olympic Range along with Mt. Ellinor, and together are usually the last snow-capped peaks at that end. Mount Washington is also popular for its high traverse to its smaller neighbor Mt. Ellinor to the southwest.
