Mount Rearguard

Mount Rearguard is 12,204 foot peak on the Hellroaring Plateau, directly opposite the Line Creek Plateau (home of the famous Beartooth Highway). The approach consists of a long, poorly-maintained mine road up the side of plateau. The road has many tight, unprotected turns, but on any given day you will find at least 2-3 other vehicles in the old parking lot at the top. High to the end of the trail leading from the parking lot (roughly 4 miles) and then head straight for the mountain across the saddle that bridges Moon and Sliderock Lakes.

The climb itself is a class 2, with possible class 3 spots if you accidently pick a slightly more challenging route. I have heard of winter ascents, and can see the possibility of such if a different route besides the mine road is taken. My conscience doesn't allow me to recommend driving it in the winter.

Use USGS Alpine-Mount Maurice topo for the best visualization.
