this is a beautiful but highly challenging hike due to the nature of the volcanic terrain. its a 11 mile app'.round-hike which is not a great distance. However, the trail basically disappears as you get within 2 to 3 miles of the summit, due to no obvious trail markings on the loose sandy/cinder like soil and large boulder like rocks. most people scramble haphazardly cross-country to reach the summit. this is an intermediate type of climb. need to be able to negotiate traveling cross-country with topo map and gps combined. some paint on rocks from hikers in the past. not always accurate. great hike, but took 4hrs. up, 2hrs. down!!
