Black Mesa is a high plateau formed of black lava rock, stretching 28 miles along the north bank of the Cimarron River in southeastern Colorado, northeastern New Mexico, and into the Oklahoma panhandle. Its highest elevation (5,700 feet / 1,737 meters) is in Colorado, but its high point in Oklahoma is the highest point in the state, where it is located within Black Mesa State Park and Nature Preserve.
