Platthorn

Featured photo of Platthorn

Platthorn (3345 m) is a peak raising directly above Zermatt, on its north-east side. The closest place for sleeping is the Trift hotel at 2327 m, and Rothornhutte (3198). The routes to Platthorn start from Zermatt. One starts from the train station up to slope towards Wisshorn, and the other from the city center towards and along the Triftbach (a small water stream that in the upper part passes the Trift hotel). In both cases it is an unproblematic walk, with the first route offering all the time a wonderful view of the highest mountains around Zermatt. Time needed from Zermatt to the summit of Platthorn is about 4 hours. In summer months the route is almost without any snow and only standard walking shoes are needed. Platthorn can be climbed in combination with Mettelhorn (3406 m) which requires up to 1.5 hours extra time. The routes to these two peaks split at Furggji pass (2957 m). From that point in about 30-40 minutes one can be at any of the two summits. From Furggji pas the part of the route towards Mettelhorn goes over the upper part of a small glacier. Although it is not so steep having crampons is not a bad idea.
