Garde de Bordon (3310 m) is a huge lonely mountain between Zinal in the east and the Moiry lake in the west. It is a massif that splits the southern part of the Val d' Anniverse into two separate valleys. Because of such a central position it offers incredible views towards many mountains over 4000 meters, including nearby Bishorn, Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Dent Blanche, but also Matterhorn, Grand Combin and Mont Blanc. Perhaps due to such great neighbours the mountain is not so frequently climbed.
The normal routes are from the Zinal and from the Moiry lake dam. In both cases one should follow the signs towards Corne de Sorebois. From the Zinal side there is a lift up to Sorebois (2438 m). From the Moiry side the route starts directly from the lake dam (2249 m) which can be reached by car or by the post bus. In both cases the first goal is Col de Sorebois. From there the route continues to the south following a lengthy ridge for about 2.5 km to the summit of Garde de Bordon (3310m). There are no signs, just a few cairns and the path is visible in some parts.
There is only one place where a particular caution is needed, at about 2/3 of the ridge route from Corne de Sorebois to the summit. It is a stone wall that contains a couloir with the entrance from the west (lake) side, with a lot of unstable rock, and around 50 degrees steep. Below it is an abyss all the way down to the lake, more than 800 meters of altitude. The couloir continues with a cliff where a rope of around 6-8 meters is fixed, and one has to climb along the rope. In 2012 the rope was in a good condition.
Those staying at the Moiry hut do not have to go down to the lake; instead one may follow a long northward trail at around 2500 m altitude high above the east side of the Moiry lake to join the route from the dam towards Col de Sorebois.
A possible descent (but also ascent for those coming from the Moiry hut) is along the south-weste ridge towards Comba Rossa and then down the scree slope towards the glacier lake with the car parking and post bus station at 2349 m. This is much better and shorter than descending along the rope and the couloir.
