Volcan Barva is an extinct volcano situated in the Central Volcanic range of Costa Rica and in Braulio Carrillo National Park. At its summit one can admire laguna Barva via two view points the second one being the summit of the volcano and better view on the lagune. Trails are maintained and evident in this sector wich is called Volcan barva sector, it is necessary to start your hike here as it is the only way to ascend Volcan Barva.
This poorly visited park especially from foreigners is a great adventure to get to especially if you do not have a vehicle. Indeed, to get to the Volcan Barva sectors entrance of the park you will absolutely need a 4w4 vehicle since there is no asphalt after the Village of Sacramento (the road is really difficul, and no bus will get you to Sacramento since he would not have a space to veer to go down). Notice that some locals park there car just where the asphalt ends and walk to the entrance. There is even signs from people who live off the road at this point who offer parking off the road for about 2 us dollars (not necessary, since the only trafic here is you and your vehicle, few locals).
For those of you who do not have a car it is possible to get a bus ride from Heredia at the bus stop for San Jose de la Montana (notice take the bus that departs at 6h45am to arrive early enough to walk the whole distance between Paso Llano and the park entrance) it is absolutely necessary to ask the bus driver if he goes all the way up to Paso llano, this is where you will need to get off and start walking about 5km to the entrance(my sources vary greatly on this). At this fork the bus driver parked his bus just in front of a resturant you will need to go back a few meters to the fork and go left there should be a sign that says Volcano. It is feasable counting the summit and your way down to catch the last bus of 17h00 in Paso Llano (where you were drop off in the morning) which is also the last bus that you do not want to miss. If you arrive early the restaurant at the fork has good food and beer, the park only has potable water and a camping area.
This info is valid as I hiked this volcano in june 2013.
