Situated in Parque Nacional Volcan Irazu in the cordillera central this volcano is very much so visited. A route leads up to its main crater and on certain week-ends you can expect line ups at the main entrance (sector crateres). To enter this small national parc, public transportation is available from San José and stops in Cartago and Tierra Blanca as anywhere between Cartago and the national parc, if you flag the volcan Irazu marked bus down. The bus departs in San José at 8hrs (calle1-3 and avenida 2) and stops in Cartago at 9hrs corner avenida 9 and calle 4 (ask around this is also the bus stop for buses going to Tierra Blanca only). Dont forget at the summit parking lot the public bus departs at 12h30 (this is your only public transport option to go down). With this in mind it is possible to depart from the main entrance of the parc and walk on the side of the road and get to the summit. This is a good way to enjoy the scenery and get a chance to walk a little and to flee the touristy parts of the parc. If you like you can meet the bus on his way out at the parc entrance where you first dropped off. Doing this you will have walked about 5km with out considering your visit near the crater rim at playa Hermosa and its infrastructures.Potable water or camping is not available at this park, but note there is a restaurant and souvenir shop at the main summit parking. This info is valid as of july 2013.
