Cerro Tres Amigos

Situated in the Cordillera de Tilaran mountain range of central northern Costa Rica this short hike is an option when visiting Santa Elena and the Reserva Biologica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde on a spare day. This mountain is also known as just Cerro Amigos. The touristic town of Sante Elena is reacheble by public transport from San Carlos bus terminal in San José (buses everyday at 6h30 and 14h30) or again by driving the unpaved road. This road hike is about 8km from Santa Elena (no need for a taxi from town). The trail head starts next to hotel Belmar going down, then you will take the acces road to the left (upwards) it is here that the steep grade on a clay prone road starts. This road will lead you to the summit where TV towers for Channels 7 and 13 are. There is a few buildings and a guard who is nice to talk to, he even offered me coffee while at the summit. Apparently there are views on Volcan Arenal that is situated 20 km away. Going down will take some time in reason of the steepness and the slippery clay that characterises the access road.

Hiking this mountain will take you about 3 hrs, also this mountain should not be your reason to visit the region but a free option that is offered while visiting other things. (These information are valid as of august 2013).
