Mount Aso (1592 m) on Kyushu island is the highest point of a large volcanic caldera with circumference of more than 100 km, and roughly 25x18 km size. The caldera is so large that it contains several cities. There are two roads through the caldera towards the Mt. Aso, from the south west and north west, which converge and approach the peak from the south. Car access is allowed till the starting point of the lift line. The volcano is still active, with a lot of steam from the top crater, and with many concrete shelters around the rim in case of a sudden eruption. All the area is exceptionally beautiful and green due to constant precipitation throughout the year.
