Old Desolate is located in Mount Rainier National Park on the remote northern slope of Rainier. On the south end of Old Desolate is Mystic Lake, a scenic camp spot along the Wonderland Trail. From the summit you have big views of the Carbon and Winthrop glaciers, close-up of the impressive Willis Wall on Rainier, and distant views to Glacier Peak and Mount Stuart on a clear day. Waters drain off the west side of Old Desolate into the Carbon River, and on the east side into the West Fork White River.
The U.S. Board of Geographic Names noted that there were three peaks on the mountain with the north and south extremes being a mile apart. Altitudes are 7,130 feet, 7,003 feet and 7,004 feet.
