Had a great time!!! A very fun and challenging route on the North Side from Tlachichuca. We used Senor Gerar to drive us up to the hut at Piedra Grande. He really runs the best service in Tlachichuca, as he is cheaper than most of his competitors, also has a hotel, and is just a good guy.
We started at the hut at 1:00am on Tuesday, October 17, 2000. We climbed by the light of the almost full moon. Once the sun was up, we were on the glacier and it was too steep to stop and take off our packs to put on sunblock. So we continued climbing for the next 5 hours and hit the crater rim half-charred and exhausted. We continued over to the true summit and then exited the mountain on the opposite(south) side.
Fortunatley, the south side was very unusual in that there was snow over there (apparently, there is usually absolutely no snow on the south side). We climbed down to a sefer altitude and slope, then glissaded down 1200 vertical feet to just above the hut on the other side.
Once there, we decided to walk out to Ciudad Serdan instead of sleeping at the hut. This turned out to be quite an ordeal... I'll just say that after takeing an apparent wrong turn on a maze of dirt rodas, we ended still walking at 10:30pm and finally ended up in a tiny town named San martin after walking through endless miles of corn fields. Oh well... it was still fun!
