Fifteen of us went trekking to Mexico with Camp5 Expeditions the week of March 12-19. After a couple of days acclimatization we climbed Ixta on 3/15, left at 1:00am from the La Hoya hut, back by noon. 14 of 15 made it but the last group didn't come in until 8:00pm. We had beautiful weather and an awesome view of Popo, Malinche and Orizaba in the distance. Drove over to Tlachichuca, enjoyed the Reyes hospitality, got a powerwagon ride up to Piedra Grande hut and started out for Orizaba at midnight on 3/18. Conditions were extremely cold, windy and icy. Jason, Albert, Brian, Chip and I made the summit just as the sun was rising in the east creating the most incredible pyramidal shadow to the west at 6:30am. Back by 9:30am tired but happy. Only 5 of 14 made the top and it was tough going but well worth it. I would recommend this hike to anyone looking for adventure with a cultural experience as a bonus.
