Truly a beautiful mountain to climb. I summitted with a team organized by REI Adventures, which I would highly recommended to anyone who is ready for a high-altitude, big mountain climbing experience. A word to the wise: This is not a mountain to be attempted alone by individuals who are less than skilled mountaineers with ample experience at altitude and with excellent glacier climbing skills. I understand from local guides that six people perished in 1999 on Orizaba. However, if approached with prudence, this mountain can be an excellent introduction to high altitude mountaineering, as it was for me. Senior Reyes provided excellent hospitality and very responsible transport.
Special thanks to Ian Elman and Shawn Sampson from Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides. I can't express my gratitude in words for their support, expertise, and motivation (ABC!!!). Also, the best local guide on the mountain is Roberto Rodriguez. Roberto has led over 70 climbs up Orizaba and is second to none. He speaks some english and can be reached by contacting Senior Reyes.
