Pico de Orizaba

Pico de Orizaba Trip Report (#1054)

Tom Heller, Bobby Heller, and Larry Adams from the flat lands of West Texas summitted Orizaba after two unsuccessful attempts in 1996. We had perfect weather the entire trip. It was such a thrill to finally stand on top of Orizaba. Our success came from two factors, good weather and proper acclimation. We flew into Mexico City on Thursday and drove to Tlachichuca, drove to Piedra Grande Friday, hiked down to tree level and back on Saturday, did nothing at Piedra Grande on Sunday, hiked to a high camp Monday, and summited on Tuesday feeling perfect. We took the Jampa glacier straight up, veering to the right at first, then cutting left under the "hump" then back right to the ridge. We were up at 4 am on the trail by 5 am, summit at noon, and Piedra Grande at 4:30 pm. Senior Reyes handled things for us and we had a perfect trip. Thanks!! The only sobering event was the death of three Russian climbers while we were there. We witnessed the helicopter taking the bodies off the mountain.
