Our party did almost everything wrong & yet completed the climb [3 of us in party, I'm the only one who completed the ascent] in 1961 there wasn't much in the way of gear available, ice axe & crampons were essential, got 2nd degree burns on nose & lips, use cold cream or other sun block; don't smoke cigarettes-I did at the time, allow several days at base to acclimate +/-9,000 ft [my compatriots couldn't breath & got altitude sickness], arrange to take guide w/ donkeys & water [we didn't] could not find any water on mountain except in snow or ice & had insatiable thirst !!!!! Probably took easiest route from south starting in last village near saddle between Orizaba & lower mountain to south on west side [took bus from hotel in Ciudad Cerdan] total vertical climb was nearly 10,000 ft
