Even in July there is usually a sizeable patch of snow leading up to the col. We ventured onto the snow - w/o ice picks - but WARNING ! it is very steep and without ice picks, very dangerous. After kick stepping our way about half way up the hard snow we turned around and realized how bad a misstep and resulting slide down onto the rock field would feel. So we gingerly side-stepped over to the exposed rocks and continued on our way up tomthe col and ridge. It's a fun ridge walk after the col by the way. And you get a view of Rae Glacier which feeds water to Elbow River and city of Calgary. A beautiful day it was, and so nice to be far above the madding crowd down at Ptarmigan Cirque.
