Beautiful sunny fall days. sept. 20th went to top of cliff above Buck lake and then to Nelson Basin. Encountered a Bull Elk and about 15 cows where trail crosses the wilderness line.
Looked like they were on steroids.
Sept.23 went to Buck Lake climbed to saddle on Nelson via game trail, inspected rock formations on east side of butte and then back through saddle and along game trail that traverses west side of butte and then back to trail head via Mt. Aix trail.
Sept. 25 went to saddle in search of trail from old map and then to Nelson Creek which I panned without finding color. Back to trail head on Belson Butte trail.
Sorry I have no interesting stories to tell of the summit.
After a few times to the summit the rest of the mountain becomes more intriguing than the summit.
For those going to summit. proceeding north from the summit to Richmond Mine trail, following it down Dog Creek to Aix trail makes a very nice extension. You will see trees four people can't hold hands and reach around. I have encountered
Black Bears, Cougars, Barred Owls and a wolf in Dog Creek drainage. Snow on Nelson Butte is down to 6599 ft which is elevation of saddle. frank, sept 29 2007
