It is not a technically difficult climb but the altitude (20,000+ feet) is always an issue. Coming from sea level with only three days in Arequipa I had trouble catching my breath. With my guide's encouragement, however, I reached the peak after about seven hours of climbing on the final day. The rewards are overlooking Arequipa just as the sun is breaking over the mountains and a beautiful view of the southern sky on a perfectly cloudless night. I strongly recommend this climb for anyone who knows how to self-arrest with an ice axe and is comfortable with crampons. My guide was excellent. His name is Ivan and his office is in the pedestian alley behind the cathedral.
