This was my second year in a row to spend my vacation climbing on the Tower. I had such a good time last year climbing with Frank and staying at Devils Tower Lodge, I went back for more. It was even better the 2nd time. Frank, Lorna, and Jaap make things so much fun. The meals were great, but the fellowship was even better. That doesn't begin to touch the climbing experience. We did 8 or 9 pitches on the first day to get the feel of the rock. The second day Frank, Tom, Deb, and I did the first pitches of Carol's Crack, Raindance, and Carl's Face. Frank was kind enough to do the leading so we could try climbs that made us really pay attention to technique, etc. Also Frank made it a point to stress safety. The wind storm that arrrived that day also helped push the adrenaline a little higher. Saturday was climbing one on one with Frank to the top up El Cracko. Standing on the summit is a great thrill. The 360 view is pretty impressive. The next two days Lorna joined us and added to the fun. Once again with Frank setting top ropes, we got to stretch ourselves on
the climbs (literally and figuratively) We did the first pitches of El Matador, McCarthy West Face, and Tulgey Wood. The big climb my last day was the first 2 pitches of Belle Fourche Buttress. Every time I would begin struggling Frank would call down encouragement or make a very useful suggestion. At the end I was bruised, sore, and bleeding just a little, so I knew I had had a great time and pushed myself a little.
If you want to climb the Tower, then Frank, Lorna, and Jaap are who you should go with. I also recommend staying at the B & B. The accomodations are great and you can't beat the view of the Tower off the front deck. If you do end up sore at the end of the day, the hot tub is located just under the front deck. Frank, Lorna, Jaap, thanks for a great time.
