I love the area above Onion Valley. On this trip I took the trail from the Onion Valley trailhead over the pass and past Bullfrog Lake to the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail. From this point I hiked southward along the trail past Center Peak and then looped back north through the basin to Hidden Bear Lake. This part of Kings Canyon National Park is beautiful! I decided to make my return to Onion Valley a challenging one, so I tackled the SE approach to University Peak. I made it, but at that point in my trip, it took most of what I had. After topping out I desended the west side down to Independence Creek and then followed the creek back to Onion Valley. At some points the weather didn't cooperate, but never-the-less this was a great trip!
