I was leading a school group from Nairobi School. The mountain is covered with dense rainforest, fumeroles were steaming from rocks at the base. It didn't take long to climb to the crater edge - a vast circle with a distinct peak almost directly opposite where we were standing. There was no need for any ropes, merely a steep exposed rather crumbling edge. The african boys ran off around the crater with no problems. Myself, my wife and an Indian teacher Supil Wankadia brought up the rear and kept a close eye on the more timid of the boys. My wife Gill was great - until we got to the scramble up the narrow crumbling ridge to the summit With the help of a couple of students we conned her to the top from where we could see the whole of the Great Rift Valley. At the bottom we all enjoyed a great BBQ and the bus ride back up the wall of the Rift Valley to Nairobi.
