My climb took place 30 years ago, in 1972, so a lot of detail has long since been forgotten. But I do know that the highlight of my one and only visit to Japan was my climb of Mt. Fuji. I was in the country with a few thousand other Boy Scouts from around the world to attend the World Jamboree at the foot of the mountain (Asigiri heights)and the Fuji climb was offered to all boys as an option on the trip. We took the bus up to station 5, I think, and made a day hike of the summit and back down. I don't recall the climb being particularly difficult, it was more of an endurance issue than anything else. I was surprised at how crowded it was and at all the mountain huts along the way. The weather was beautiful, a fair number of clouds but no rain.
I'm glad I bought the Fuji stick and took the time to have all the station brands burned in along the way. I don't know if I'd have the patience to do it now! The most fun was the descent as we jumped and rolled and leapt our way down the scree slope on the downside trail. I probably wouldn't do that again but I'm also not 17 anymore. I hope to have a chance to prove my foolishness by climbing it a second time someday.
