Shortoff Mountain is located on the southern terminus of the eastern ridgeline of Linville Gorge. The easiest route to the summit is following the Mountain-to-Sea Trail from either the north or south. The mountain is famous for its western flank which runs for nearly a mile parallel to the Linville River, and drops practically 600 ft. vertically to the forested slopes below. The technical routes up Shortoff are varied and plentiful with most offering excellent exposure. The view from the actual summit is obstructed by trees, but the views from the cliff edges are wonderful. Shortoff is approximately four miles south from the Table Rock parking area, and a mile and a half northwest from a lesser known parking area (for rugged vehicles only).
