I climbed Mt. Wilhelm with 10 of my friends. The hike to the cabin on the lake is challenging. My girlfriends and I hired bag carriers at K40 per carrier, K20 for the trip up and K20 for the trip down. The cabin costs K50 per night. We started the hike at 1am the following morning and hiked in the dark. I took very little with me, just water, snack food, water, and I dressed warmly. Wikipedia says that it takes 4-6 hours to make the summit but it took the men in our group 5 1/2 hours and we 3 girls took 7 1/2 hours to make it to the top. It was very difficult climbing in the high altitude. Whether you make it or not does not depend so much on how fit you are (although it is good to be as fit as possible) but rather it depends on how determined you are. It was very windy and cold at the top and we couldn't linger for long. The clouds cleared enough for the men to see the view for a short time. The climb down was just as challenging and took us girls 5 1/2 hours. I don't recommend attempting it without guides as at least 8 people have died up there and it would be easy to lose the trail in places. The guides are very good and will take good care of you. Our guide was going up for the 27th time! I highly recommend going on this hike with a small group of friends. There's nothing like facing difficult challenges to draw a group of people together.
