Fantastic climb more for the walk in and the journey up than the climb itself. Fly to Mt Hagan and then 7 hours in the back of a pick up on the worst roads does nothing for the bum.... Go via Kundiawa and then up into the deep Highlands. Spectacular scenery, wildife, passed a proper 'Sing Sing' (tribal festival dance).

Stayed at Betty's lodge. Great place to stay. Clean, food is great all things considered and what she has done there is amazing.

Guides cost nothing. Warning - they will wear trainers and welly boots at best. Most up to ABC will go bare feet - men and women. You will have a ton of offers to sherpa up to ABC. Let the lodge staff deal with it if you need. It' all cool and may seem aggressive but trust me, it's not. Bark is much worse than bite and work is scarce.

The walk to ABC goes through secondary rain forest and then into an plain that looks like something from Jurassic Park. Takes about 3-5 hours depending on your fitness. Locals will do it in 1.5 hours no sweat with full kit.

ABC is next to a stunning lake. Summit day starts at 0000, to top out at about 6-8 hours later. Final 50m to summit is a simple scramble. No real snow but it can still get to -10 with wind so be prepared.

Walk down takes forever but the views are just some of the best untouched landscape ever to be seen. What you see is how it was 10,000 years ago. Stop at ABC for a brew and to pick up kit and then go immediately down to Betty's unless you fancy a dip and to explore the lakes, wildlife and just soak it all in.

Flights from Port Moresby are often and cheap but beware the local's lack of washing. If you thought peeling onions makes your eyes water, this is something else. Same for the wait in Mt Hagan Airport but all part of the experience and totally worth a trip that VERY few others will do.
