It now costs 10 dollars per car to drive up into the Crater lake parking area. Drive up the road before 7 a.m. and there isn't an attendant there so it's free. Also, they close the road at 8:30 a.m. and force hikers to ride up in a bus shuttle. The road reopens at 5 p.m. We N. Maroon and did the traverse to S. Maroon Bell. It was a 14 hour day for us--Left at 6 a.m. and got back to the car at 8:15 p.m. You need a good weather day to do this traverse. We climbed exposed and loose rock up the NE ridge of N. Maroon. This was a spooky part. We summited N. Maroon at 11:45 a.m. and then headed across the ridge to S. Maroon. For us, the traverse required one section of pack lowering so we could safely downclimb it and one section of 25 feet rappeling. We left a 6mm-rope anchor up there, feel free to use it! The ridge is spooky but to me, it wasn't as scary as the NE ridge up N. Maroon. We summited S. Maroon at 3 p.m. and descended the east snow couloir just south of the summit. We downclimbed the couloir in crampons with a little glissading near the bottom. What a great day!
