Crestone Needle Trip Report (#10287)

We had perfect conditions at the Summit on August 10, 2000 at 1:30 pm. There was no wind, and good visibility in all directions - an unforgettable moment. Bob Huitt led me from the South Colony Lakes to the notch west of Broken Hand peak. We ascended Crestone Needle from the east couloir. At about 13,700' we were buzzed by a hummingbird. During the descent, we had a T-storm just west of the notch at 13,200'. We found shelter under a ledge for nearly an hour. We descended from Broken Hand notch to the South Colony lakes in drizzle. Packing raingear paid off big-time. Crestone Needle was a difficult but memorable climb. I was fortunate to pair with an experienced climber.
