Mount Kilimanjaro

Machame Route

  • Added By: Terrill Thompson
  • Date added: Jan 31, 2017
  • Route Distance: 58.49 km (36.34 miles)

This route ascends the west side of the mountain, then traverses south and east, circumnavigating part of the mountain. The route is longer than the Marangu Route, and therefore offers a greater variety of views of the mountain and is better for acclimatization. Climbers sleep in tents and move camp each night. The ascent passes through a variety of distinct ecosystems, including agricultural lands, lush forests, shrublands, moorlands, and high alpine desert. Rather than backtrack, climbers descend via the Mweka Route, which is much shorter and steeper than the route up.

Getting There

Access is via Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) near the small city of Arusha, about an hour from the mountain. From here transport is easily available to the village of Moshi, and on to Machame Gate, which marks the start of the route.
